I was invited to share my insights into endemic low pay for visual artists, and how this often leads to ‘portfolio careers’, juggling a number of precarious, insecure roles. I highlighted how low and no pay creates inequality of access, explaining why artists of colour, those identifying as disabled/ neurodiverse, and those with caring responsibilities are so often squeezed out of the sector before they have a chance to establish themselves.
